What information do you need to gather to make a moving decision or prepare for a major move, and how do you find it? Apart from the quest for city comfort levels, of course. Many of us at AZ City Living have moved to new cities across the country on a number of occasions, under very different circumstances. As tourist-turned-resident (some have decided within minutes of landing in San Francisco or Arizona to visit for the weekend, thinking, where we would move).
In our travels, we have put together some tips and tricks that can help you on your journey. In our travels, we have put together some tips and tricks that can help you on your journey.
When trying to decide if a city is right for you, here are six tips for evaluating a new location as a potential base of operations:
1. Explore the town like a local
While downtowns and well-known areas will assuredly tell you a tremendous amount about the ambiance of a city, to really get a true understanding for a place, you should also venture to the less popular sides; the cities, into the neighborhoods that residents live, work and play in the perspective city.
Essential when scouting a new city, does one really do this? It is as simple as catching an Uber or Lyft and explain to the driver your intent. Or even speaking with a barista, bartender and or concierge for insights into the native life — what to eat, where to and not to venture too. Understanding this approach is the way to envision a new town through the eyes of somebody who lives there.
Here are some questions we ask locals to get a feel of a new place:
■ Parks in the City, where are the parks that are not too crowded?
■ For City Locals, where are the Weekend hang outs?
■ What are the best parts of town tourist always miss out on?
■ In the city, where are the hidden gems I must encounter?
■ Where is you favorite movie theater, bar, breakfast location, clothes shop, gym, coffee shop?
■ What are the most celebrated holidays in the city?
2. When you are out and about, collect as much information as you travel around
■ You don’t simply study a metropolis through touring unique locations inside the metropolis — you study plenty through bodily attending to and from the unique locations: How manageable is it to get around here? What public transit alternatives are available? How on hand and commutable is the metropolis?
■ I am a large fan of taking walks as tons as feasible while I’m journeying a brand new place — there’s absolutely no replacement to get a sense for a metropolis than pounding the pavement.
■ If you’re taking public transit, be aware of the fluidity of the route and if it’d be a viable opportunity compared to taking a car. If you’re taking a Lyft or Uber, ask the driver their take on an area and what recommendations they’d give to a person thinking about moving to the city. If you lease a car, don’t get caught at rush hour traffic — it could be a huge part of daily life. All these details to give thought to
earlier before the move.

3. Establish your connections
When you’re considering a move, it is critical to talk with locals to get correct statistics and insight into the area and surrounding area that interests you. People you meet unassumingly can bring different insight to the same area. Social media is a good place to research the area of interest. With input from a trusted online community, your questions can be answered. When I was interested about Sacramento, I published on Facebook, “Hey friends! Can you tell me more about Sacramento. The ins and outs.” I didn’t think I had any connections to Sacramento, however my inbox lit up with followers, introductions and tips and within minutes my network was established. I was able to get a true sense of my desired location.
4. Consider communicating with the experts
A lot of people, don’t realize that towns are competing for brand new citizens to attract — and that means, greater than ever, towns and chambers of trade are creating proactive approaches to assist humans relocate.
In Iowa City/Cedar Rapids, new citizens can get linked with upcoming activities/events or even get a local “wingman” to assist them make friends. In Vermont, you may upload community excursions and activities for your weekend holiday itinerary (or even receive a commission up to $7,500 if you make a decision to move). In Muskegon, activity seekers can take benefit of professional listings, apprenticeships and schooling, through West Michigan Works! In Pueblo, the Chamber of Trade assists new citizens with facts and networking or even runs a famous socialization event for newcomers. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the city, visitors’ bureau or Chamber of Trade to seek help in providing you invaluable information. You might be surprised.
5. Use the Maps to get Lost in your City – Discover the NEW
You want to collect plenty of statistics while you’re getting ready to make a large move. It’s tempting to return back to this technique from a completely logical place: collecting statistics and facts and organizing it into binders and itineraries, from pros and cons lists. But here’s the thing: being satisfied in an area isn’t constantly a quantifiable or logical thing. A lot of it boils down to just, well, how an area makes you feel. So, when still in question of the area you’re considering, make use of all the information gathered and simply get lost while exploring. Wander around, take incorrect turns, communicate to strangers and take in what you discover. You may come upon an area, someone or a second that makes you realize: yes, that is home.
6. Simulate your intended way of life by renting a house, apartment, or hotel for a week or
extended period of time to explore the area interested in and get an idea of the routine you have planned in mind for. Maybe even house sit for a friend in that area if the opportunity arises. Commute to potential employment areas to assess time, mileage, and flow of traffic. Run common errands, gain familiarity with the area and flow of life. ( DON’T know if this is included).
